Artist Statement

Often I experience pareidolia, like seeing an animal form in a puffy cloud, a common human experience. In my artworks, which I call STAINTINGS, I bring attention to this phenomenon in the wood-grain landscapes I see. The imagery draws the viewer in as they relate to my seeing the thing that is and isn’t there. On a job site years ago, I noticed a scrap of plywood that had a contoured wood grain resembling the silhouette of the Olympic Mountains at dusk. I brought that wood scrap back to my studio where I enhanced the wood grain by color staining and I added tree silhouettes; the finished product was Stainting No. 1. Now I automatically scan every piece of wood I see for a wood grain horizon line. My years working in the fine art services industry and as a professional house painter have equipped me in two ways to create Staintings. First is the expertise I gained in painting and woodworking techniques, and second is the supply of scrap materials I salvage to up-cycle into artwork. Staintings encourage that spark of creativity that a person can practice in their own work, and revitalize their own way of seeing this world with a fresh perspective.

Artist Bio

I’ve been making art in Seattle since 1994. Around 2010, I created a particular piece of art on a scrap piece of wood that had a wood grain pattern that looked like a mountain range. As I kept exploring this direction in my art through multiple pieces, I had a pop-up exhibition or two, and discovered that people really like them, which inspired me to make many more. To date I have numbered over 150 STAINTINGS. I have participated in multiple juried art shows in the Seattle area, including Bellevue Arts Fair, and West Seattle Studio Tour.
