James Ziots
Artist Statement
I am a West Seattle based artist who has been oil painting for over 30 years, of unique landscapes and locations. Mostly self-taught, my influence comes from studying the inspiring art masters of the Hudson River School that so well captured the magnificence of Pacific Northwest during the 19th century. I’ve chosen to paint in a more technical method; utilizing the Grisaille technique as an underpainting, a detailed finished painting in monochrome color, with multiple layers of translucent color added only after the form and values are finished. This is a longer process, but it creates a complex vibrant oil painting with the colors seen being of those reflecting off the underpainting traveling back through layers of colors. Historically, most of my work is commission based, which can be arranged if one desires, but this is the first time my artwork has been made available to the public. Regardless, above all, I simply paint because I deeply enjoy the process, relaxing in the moment of places I’ve seen in this beautiful world.
