Artist Statement

My aim is to make stoneware that is locally grounded, steeped in humanity, but plays peek-a-boo with its place in history. My everyday vessels are formed then carved and textured so glaze and firing complete the surface. My influences include traditional craft, archaeological ceramics, and the practical ingenuity of historic household objects. Pacific Northwest plants and marine life appear as motifs drawn from the place where I live and work. I continue to use tools inherited from my grandmother, whose teaching shaped my respect for patience and utility. I am drawn to pottery because it holds tension between fragility and endurance. A cup is ordinary, yet it can last for generations.

Artist Bio

Jessica Rasmusson is the potter behind Hand Slow Pottery, a solo studio focused on functional stoneware for everyday living. Working in the Pacific Northwest, Jessica produces mugs, tableware, ornaments, and seasonal pieces using hand-building and wheel throwing. Each object is formed, carved, and glazed by hand in small batches. A family connection to ceramics began with a grandmother whose tools remain in use in the studio today. Local plants and marine life often appear as subtle surface elements or integral forms, and glaze is developed to respond to firing rather than illustration. The work is shown at regional art festivals and street fairs throughout Washington State.
