Johanna Lindsay
Artist Statement
I create jewelry with a variety of traditional stitching techniques, using larger beads to create sculptural works that play with light and color. Each piece is woven with a needle and sturdy, specialized thread, Czech glass and other materials. My current body of work is focused on nostalgic colorways that evoke joyful memories, with a focus on colors and shapes drawn from Central European folk art.
Artist Bio
A life-long Northwesterner, I fell in love with beads as a child and have been working professionally as a jeweler since 2004. Along with a lifetime of exploring design and technique, a sociology degree informs my approach to designs that recognize the power of adornment to help us navigate and control how the world perceives us.
After an early fascination with lampwork bead making, I began to experiment with ways to create similarly sculptural forms using seed beads and Czech glass beads as my raw medium rather than glass rods. Building forms, layering elements and techniques, and the exploration of color offer endless possibilities.
My current body of work is focused on nostalgic colorways that evoke joyful memories, especially colors and shapes drawn from Central European folk art.
