John de Mars
Painting / drawing / mixed media (2 dimensional)
Artist Statement
I am an oil painter based in West Seattle, working primarily in large-scale, original impressionist and contemporary realism paintings. My work explores presence, legacy, and emotional energy through bold brushwork, controlled light, and intentional color.
I am drawn to subjects that carry weight — cultural icons, wildlife, moments of stillness, and powerful expressions. Whether painting a solitary pelican suspended in coastal light or a larger-than-life portrait, I aim to capture something beyond likeness — a pulse, a memory, a charge in the air.
Oil is my primary medium because of its depth, richness, and timelessness. I build my paintings through layered texture and confident strokes, allowing movement to remain visible in the final piece. Technique matters deeply to me — each work is carefully composed, built with structural integrity, and finished to gallery standards.
As part of the West Seattle creative community, I value both craftsmanship and evolution. My goal is to create museum-quality originals that feel both modern and enduring — works that command space, start conversations, and live with collectors for decades.
All paintings are original oil works.
