Artist Statement
For most of my life, I have been a ceramic artist, though my journey has been shaped by profound personal shifts. My work took a significant turn in 2006 following the death of my father; moved to honor his spirit, I began specializing in creating beautiful, handcrafted cremation urns.
In 2012 I transitioned away from coil building to slab building. Utilizing a slab roller I built myself, I fell in love with the unique pallet of form-related possibilities this method offers. Slabs provide the perfect foundation for my minimalistic style, allowing me to explore the nuances of shape and structure.
While my memorial work remains a cornerstone of my practice, I also love to create more traditionally functional items, such as the tableware and vases. These pieces bring my minimalistic sensibility to the daily rituals of the home. Whether it’s a vase, or a set of dinnerware, they are a functional extension of the same philosophy that guides my cremation urns: honoring the connection between the earth, the maker’s hand, and the cycle of daily life.
Artist Bio
I am a local potter who is passionate about creating simple, beautiful functional pottery with graceful elegance, be it a cremation urn for a person or pet, or everyday-use tableware. My work is crafted with clay slabs that perfectly lend themselves to the minimalist forms that I love to create.
Having worked with clay most of my life, I have a wealth of knowledge and expertise that I am now ready to share with folks. I am excited to continue my teaching and knowledge sharing at Damien Grava’s Westwood Art Studio.
