Artist Statement
In my current work I attempt to capture the small but beautiful moments: holding your breath and watching; subconsciously understanding more than you’ve been told. It’s the beauty of observation, of being, of gratitude, of oneness with all and also questioning truth, story, and what really matters. My paintings are done on canvas or cradled wood and have layers built upon them; starting with an intuitive and loose approach; using mediums for texture, charcoal, and mark making before moving into layers of acrylic and or oil as I tighten and render from abstract to realism. I’ve intentionally built my process to keep with the feel of my paintings; of expansiveness, light, and following what is calling me so my heart stays open with each step. Many of my subjects are birds and most of my paintings come to me and I can’t let them go until I paint them (or keep painting them). At times I paint in series including landscapes or still life rooted in nature to go along side my birds and tell a story. I have found that birds hold a great deal of meaning, symbolism, and story for many people and I paint to deepen my understanding of this and attempt to capture the story wanting to be told.
Artist Bio
Rachael Ann Engell is a self taught artist who fell in love with fine art in college; enrolling in as many art classes as she could while completing her degree in Business. Painting now for over 20 years, always a part of her life and what seemed a far fetched dream; she committed to making her dream a reality and has stepped out as a professional artist within the last year; selling her work through art shows, local businesses, and building an online presence which has shipped worked across the United States. This has been an expansive time and her work continues to grow with her as she follows her authentic path.
