Artist Statement
I call my paintings “linocut paintings”, because they start with dozens of layers of linocuts to form a textured surface. Once the texture and composition come together, I paint linework and enhance the geometry created by the patterning inherent in the printing process. By the end, the carvings themselves are hidden & are merely a means to the end.
The concept of circles of life and the interplay of connections are central to my work. My carvings are text about parenthood and politics, forming the foundation of each piece. Some incorporate my children's drawings and writings, adding a personal touch and a shared family language. The layering process creates a palimpsest effect, where the obscured text contributes to a rich visual narrative.
Additionally, I started a collage series during Covid lockdown, slicing up my own early linocut prints and recomposing them. Now, I weave linocut work & a friend’s late father’s neckties into my paintings, creating hybrids of the two mediums. Some of the work remains abstract, while I take a stand with other pieces, pulling the political to the forefront.
